History

I earned a B.S. from Western KY University in Agriculture Education and for several years my career revolved around the farm feed supply business. During this time I had access to volumes of research material and hundreds of feed ingredients. More importantly I listened to the stories of older deer hunters as I traveled a delivery route. These old time deer hunters where very observant when it came to a deer’s habits, travel patterns and growth from one year to another. The final thing that began the development of Soggy Bottom Outdoors Wildlife Mineral was my dissatisfaction with all the commercial products on the market. Many of these commercial products did little to promote the overall health of deer. Some included ingredients deer wouldn’t begin to use and none lived up to their outlandish claims. What a Wildlife Mineral Should Be: One goal in creating my mineral was that it be specific for the Ohio River Valley. This is where I live and hunt and of course the area I know the most about. The Ohio River Valley has specific plant life, topography, soil conditions and climate which in turn give the wildlife here special nutritional needs. These needs can’t be met by minerals from another state and even less so by one from another country. A mineral designed for deer was another goal. Many hunters are using cattle mineral for deer. Let me assure you that the internal workings of a deer and a cow are different, as are their feeding habits. Cows are grazers and deer are browsers. Some of the minerals that commonly occur in cattle mineral, copper and selenium for example if in high levels can be toxic to deer. What to put in was another goal. I literally have hundreds of ingredients in my warehouse but they are not all created equal. If an ingredient is not in a highly digestible form and not in the right ratio in the total mix then a deer will not find it palatable and walk on by. Or if the do use it they will not get the full benefit from it. What to leave out. Soggy Bottom Outdoors Wildlife Mineral contains no sugar, molasses, or protein. Sugar and molasses do nothing to promote to overall health of deer or any other wildlife and doesn’t persist well in the environment usually disappearing with the first good rain. Protein doesn’t last long in the environment either and it’s usually only a matter of days until it becomes rancid and uneatable. If a protein source is your goal I strongly suggest establishing a food plot. Not only will this supply protein but habitat as well. It’s more than just salt. If you did nothing more than dump some white salt out in the woods deer would use it, but that’s all they get is salt. By using my product they also get vitamins and trace minerals which are sometimes difficult to obtain in the environment. They get all of this in one package and in one location.

Usage

Soggy Bottom Outdoors Wildlife Mineral is available in ten-pound bags, which is enough to establish one lick site. #9 is designed to be constantly refreshed all year round. It’s not a product just to thrown out a couple weeks before season. You will have the best results if you place #9 in an area of highest year round deer traffic. Simply empty the contents of one bag on the ground where several deer trails converge. There is no need to add water, dig a hole, or mix with soil, Mother Nature will take care of that. The lick site may need refreshed after the first rain and periodically after that. Establish your lick sites in places where heavy usage will not be a problem. In some test sites deer literally pawed a 6x6 hole over a foot deep. The nutritional needs of deer change several times during the year. Because of this the amount of #9 needed will also change. During certain seasons they may use the mineral as fast as you put it out and in other seasons they may seem to be ignoring it. This should be considered normal.

FAQ

Is Soggy Bottom Outdoors Wildlife Mineral #9 an attractant?
No. It is a vitamin and mineral supplement. It has no artificial colors or fragrances added. The natural and unique smell of the ingredients is what attracts deer to it. Some commercial products add colors and sweet smells but this is more to attract deer hunters than deer.

Does #9 contain vitamins?
Yes. Very few commercial products on the market today contain vitamins, which are just as important as minerals. Vitamins are expensive to add to a product and difficult to keep in a palatable form once placed in the environment. But I found a way to do it.

Why #9?
I literally made dozens of different versions of the mixture before I hit on a basic blend and after nine changes I ended with the product I am now offering. It is the most economical, easy to use, and covers a wider variety of habitats than any of the previous blends.

Why do I call it wildlife mineral?
Funny you should ask. As I said earlier #9 is designed for deer but the other species of wildlife utilizing it is incredible. Early in the development of #9 when we created a new lick test site we put a game camera near it. One particular site, on a 36-exposure roll of film we had pictures of 14 raccoons, 6 opossums, 5 rabbits, 6 squirrels, 4 deer, and believe it or not 1 coyote.

Continued Testing

Just as it took a lot of trial and error to develop #9 I began an experimental version of if this spring that I hope to have on the market by Spring ’08. At this time it is only called “EX”. I have changed some of the ingredients to more natural ones that deer crave. I have also condensed some of the ingredients to make it stronger and more palatable.

Thanks and Happy Hunting!
