Default First Bird down

I was invited to go on a hunt in Boyle County to help a buddy get his first bird. We started out the day blind as can be because this was the first time we had been on this farm but Ash knew his birds. Little did we know that we had set up about 50 yards from these birds. After we got the decoys set up Jusin hit the trusty owl call. He hit the owl call and we didn't hear a single bird but he motioned to me saying that he saw a bird, and I thought yeah sure you did. When we set up I was sitting about 15 yards up from Ash and Justin. Well about 5 minutes after we sat down justin started to call and it sounded like the woods came alive ( If you could have only seen my eyes when those birds gobbled that close to us). They end up flying down on the other side of the hill but they are still gobbling like crazy so we didn't want to give up or try setting up on them again. So Justin and I start calling and they are still gobblin like crazy at about 7:30 I see a couple hens coming up over the hill. Well at one point they are no more then 5 yards from Justin and Ash. The hens end up walking back down the hill after a couple minutes. About 10 minutes later 2 more hens come out into the field and the one breaks off from the other and comes to about 20 yards from me and starts to check me out. After a couple minutes she walks back down over the hill. Around 8:15 I see a group of jakes come up and they sit just inside the woods for about 5 minutes. So I'm sitting and waiting on Ash to shoot one of these birds. After a couple minutes I see these birds are getting nervous and Ash isn't shooting so I decided that I'm going to shoot one of these birds. I raise my gun up and click the safety off and BOOM. Justin yells did you get it? Well yeah I got it. So we take off down the hill and grab the bird. First thing I say is why in the hell didn't you guys shoot those birds. Come to find out they couldn't even see the birds. In the end I felt bad because I wanted Ash to get him a bird, but we already have plans to go back and get him on his first bird. Ash told me it was ok that he still had a time, and I think he will forever be hooked on turkey hunting.
