Well, today was the last day of gun season in Zone 1 & 2 counties. Since I've gone since the early muzzleloading season without seeing a deer, I figured that squirrel hunting would be more productive.
The boy and I went this morning and sat in the shooting shack to pick off some of the little fuzzy vermin we've been watching for the past 3 weekends. I had my .17 HMR and the boy had his .22 LR. The boy has gone with me hunting several times, but has never "shot" at anything (other than paper). The first one to show up this morning, he wanted me to shoot. OK!

1 shot, 1 half-decapitated squirrel.

The next one to show up, he decided to shoot at. Notice I said "shoot at"..........

Shot and missed. Directly, the squirrel came back and the boy was having a tough time getting on him (the window of the shack was almost too high for him. I had him standing on 2 2x4's to get him up high enough). The squirrel decided he didn't want to stick around with all of the commotion going on, and left. I told the boy that if he came back, I better shoot him because he was going to be really skittish. He was! Came back and stared down at the shack long enough to get a 17 grain V-Max bullet straight up his nose.
A little bit after that one, another one showed up. The boy shot, and missed! This time, the squirrel just sat there though!

I haven't gotten a magazine for his little CZ rifle, so it still has the plastic plug in the magazine well making it a single shot. The squirrel decided that he didn't want to stick around while I reloaded the gun.
We ended up with the 2, but it's still better than what we would have gotten if we had just been deer hunting.

We had a good time, and the boy learned that hitting them little squirrels isn't quite as easy as I've made it look.
